When I first signed out this book, I was expecting it to be a funny, interesting novel, which I would enjoy but I felt the novel lacked humour and the mystery dragged on throughout the book. The book focusing on Native Americans and their culture, which I personally am interested in and I felt the book did portray the cultural side of a Native American community well, but the book was quite boring and not the best read.

This novel is quite mysterious and has a couple great twists, but I personally was a bit disappointed after reading this book. Maggie is the chief of the community but also a widow who encounters a mysterious stranger. This novel takes place in a small Native American community – Otter Lake, and is based on the lives of Maggie and her teenage son Virgil. The next book I read for White Pine is Motorcycles and Sweet Grass by Drew Hayden Taylor.
